Asbestos became increasingly popular among manufacturers and builders in the late 19th century because of its sound absorption, average tensile strength, its resistance to fire, heat, electrical and chemical damage, and affordability. It was used in such applications as electrical insulation for hotplate wiring and in building insulation. When asbestos is used for its resistance to fire or heat, the fibres are often mixed with cement (resulting in fibre cement) or woven into fabric or mats.
Asbestos can commonly be found as Asbestos Cement and used for corrugated roofing sheets. In Asbestos Cement products the asbestos is bonded into the cement as part of the manufacturing process.
Asbestos cement products contain white (Chrysotile) asbestos whereas insulation boards and other asbestos materials commonly contain brown (Amosite) and/or blue (Crocidolite) asbestos. It is accepted that the brown and blue forms of asbestos are much more dangerous than the white.
At L & L Home Improvements Ltd we are happy to remove asbestos sheeting and replace these with either bitumen sheets or PVC sheeting. We have 2 ways of disposing the sheets, either through your local council or with a fully licenced asbestos sheet collector. We do all the preparation with the removing and double bagging of the sheets.
We then check that your beams and joists are in sound order and replace if needed. Once we have the new sheeting in place and all the falls correct we screw these into place using special cap screws. After this we fill in the gaps around the edge usually with expanding foam. Some garages and large sheds have guttering systems and these are all realign.
